Adoption Checklist
Compiled from guidance by the American Humane Society, tailored for every new cat parent.
Consider Adopting Two
Cats need exercise, mental stimulation, and social interaction. Two cats can provide this for each other — plus you get double the purring.
Match Personalities
Long-haired, round-faced cats tend to be more easygoing; lean, narrow-faced cats are often more active. Our team can help you find the right fit.
Line Up a Vet First
Find a veterinarian before adoption day and schedule a visit within the first few days. Bring all medical records from the adoption center.
Make It a Family Decision
Everyone in the home should be ready and on board. Visit the shelter together, and discuss with us how to introduce a new cat to existing pets.
Budget for the Long Term
Cats adopted from a rescue are a bargain — most come vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and microchipped. Plan for ongoing food, vet care, and supplies.
Stock Up Before Day One
You'll need a litter box, food & water bowls, cat food, scratching posts, safe toys, a bed, brush, toothbrush, and nail clippers.
Cat-Proof Your Home
Remove loose items they might chew, secure electric cords, and keep counters clear of food. A new cat will quickly reveal any hazards you missed.
Go Slowly with Introductions
It can take weeks for a cat to relax in a new home. Keep them in one room initially, then gradually expand their world as they settle in.
Include Them in Emergency Plans
Update your family emergency plan to include your cat. Save your vet's number and nearest 24-hour animal hospital. Never leave them behind.
Gifts? Involve the Recipient
If you're considering giving a cat as a gift, make the recipient an active part of the process. A cat is a living, feeling being — not a surprise package.
